The rules and guidelines below are specific to the Gala Challenge Violin Category.  Please ensure you have thoroughly read all the Pacific Youth Music Festival Rules and Regulations.

PRELIMINARY ROUND 

​

Participants may choose video submission or attend in-person during the Preliminary Round.  

​

Novice/Junior/Intermediate

Each participant must perform TWO pieces of contrasting musical styles, one of which must be from the Baroque or the Classical Era.

Senior

Each participant must perform TWO pieces of contrasting musical styles. One of which must be an Unaccompanied Baroque Sonata or Partita (one or more movements within the class time limit).

GENERAL CLASS REQUIREMENTS

​

  1. Selections belonging to two different levels under The Royal Conservatory of Music’s current Violin Syllabus but to the same Level Category may be registered under the Level Category (Example: Selections from Levels 5 and 6 may be registered under the Junior Category).  Selections that fall under two different Level Categories must be registered under the senior category. (Example: Selections from Levels 6 and 7 must be registered under the Intermediate Category.)

  2. Any concerti and concertini maybe performed as one of the selections in the Solo Classes.

  3. To ensure a fair and competitive field, participants wishing to enter the Concerto Class must perform a different concerto (Level 10 or above) than the one they selected for the Solo class.

  4. Orchestral parts must be performed with piano accompaniment where required. Participants must provide their own collaborative pianist. Recorded accompaniment is not permitted. The participant may contact the Pacific Youth Music Festival (the “Festival”) for a list of available collaborative pianists.

  5. Memory is mandatory except for Sonatas.

MARKING SYSTEM

The Pacific Youth Music Festival (the “Festival”) will operate on the following Grading System for all competitive solo classes:

ADJUDICATION PROCEDURE

​

  1. The Preliminary Round will be adjudicated by one professional adjudicator appointed by Pacific International Youth Music Society.

  2. All participants will receive written critiques and certificate of participation at the end of the individual session.

  3. First and Second Place of the individual session will be announced at the end of each session. However, receiving First or Second Place of the individual session does not guarantee placement at the Gala Competition.

  4. All marks will be emailed to the participants and their teachers by 11:59 PM on the following day.

  5. The adjudicators’ decisions are final.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

​

  1. Competitive Solo Classes are in-person only.

  2. Participants may have someone else tune their instruments.

  3. Concerti include Concertini and Concert pieces that are accompanied by orchestra.

  4. Accurate performance times are necessary for class scheduling and to avoid disqualification for exceeding class time limits.

GALA COMPETITION

​

  1. To be considered for the Gala Competition, both repertoires must receive a mark of 90% or above; however, this does not guarantee placement at the Gala Competition.

  2. Up to TWO finalists from each Solo Classes will be selected from each category to perform at the Gala Competition based on the adjudicators’ recommendations.

  3. Finalists must perform one piece from the Preliminary Round selected by the adjudicator.

  4. Orchestral parts must be performed with piano accompaniment where required. Students must provide their own collaborative pianist. Recorded accompaniment is not permitted. The participant may contact the Festival for a list of available collaborative pianists.

  5. The festival is unable to accommodate collaborative pianist schedules due to the complexity of coordinating numerous individual schedules within the festival timeline.

  6. Following the competition, performers chosen to play at the Gala Competition will be notified by email. This notification will be sent by 11:59 PM on the following day. Failure to confirm attendance either from parents and/or teachers by the deadline given in the email will result in forfeiting the chance to compete at the Gala Competition.

  7. If selected, finalists must be available to perform to be eligible for scholarships.

  8. Awards will be presented in the form of scholarships. Winners will be announced at the end of the Gala Competition.

  9. Judging panel at the Gala Competition consists of 5 adjudicators. No marks and critiques will be given.
